Passion Fruit Daiquiri
Passion fruit is one of our favorite fruits when it comes to drinks with a tropical touch. The fresh fruit is incredibly floral, with a unique sweet-tart flavor that can be difficult to describe, though it is impossible to forget. Most bars don’t use fresh passion fruit juice. It’s labor intensive to collect from the fresh fruits, as each only contains a small quantity of juice, and would become quite expensive unless you live somewhere tropical to begin with. Most of the time, passion fruit juice in a bar ends up coming from a bottle and is already sweetened. It works well in some drinks, but it doesn’t have that same refreshingly tart flavor that the fresh juice has.
This Passion Fruit Daiquiri isn’t the most elaborate drink out there, but it perfectly captures the intoxicating flavor of the fresh passion fruit and is a cocktail well worth treating yourself to when you have fresh fruits on hand. You’ll need 1-2 fruits, depending on how juicy yours are. Slice open the fruits and strain the pulp through a sieve to remove the seeds. Save a few seeds for garnish, as they’re edible and they look cute floating on top of the drink, where they let the drinker know that you went through the effort of using fresh passion fruit to make it.
If you don’t have fresh fruit, don’t use the presweetened variety. Instead, check out some specialty grocery stores that have a wider variety of fruit than regular grocery stores. Some specialty food stores also stock frozen, unsweetened purees that can be used in this cocktail (and are also good for making your own syrups).
Fresh Passion Fruit Daiquiri
2 oz white rum
1/2 oz fresh, strained passion fruit puree
1/4 oz lime juice
1/2 oz simple syrup
In a mixing glass or shaker, combine all ingredients, add ice and shake until cold. Strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with a few passion fruit seeds.
