Pinup Hair Style from Tiki Oasis 2014
I don’t know that much about pinup hair styles, but I do know that they were all the rage at Tiki Oasis this year. There were some fantastic stylists – and fantastic product sponsors – giving ladies some incredible vintage hairdos. I wasn’t planning to get my hair all done up, but I lucked into an open time slot at the beauty bungalow and ended up getting a fantastic 1940’s-inspired style. I even picked up a pineapple hairpin to match my vintage pineapple-print dress.
My hair was done by Shannon, the owner of Swanky Dames Hair Studio in Ventura, California. It took about 40 minutes, start to finish, and lasted for over a day. I can safely say that it would have lasted longer if I needed it to (and I was tempted).
The curls were held in place with Suavacita by Suavacito Pomade, one of the brand sponsors for the event. Pomade is definitely a must when working with vintage hairstyles, since they can be complicated and you need every hair to stay exactly where it is supposed to be. I had never used pomade in my hair and actually always thought of it as a men’s product, but the brand makes both girl and guy versions for different applications and hair types. The girly version smells really fresh and offers a lighter hold, which is better for finer hair. But the men’s and women’s pomades are water-based and wash out easily with shampoo and don’t leave any residue on your hair.
Hands-down, this is one of the best hairstyles I’ve ever had. I won’t be able to replicate it at home – even with the help of the pomade – but I definitely will be playing around with a toned-down version that is easier for an inexperienced, non-professional to put in. And I’ll definitely be rocking another vintage style at the next big tiki event.
